FAQ

What Is Option 3?

Option 3 allows parents to legally homeschool their children by joining a homeschool association like Home Place Homeschool Association. We guide you through the process and help ensure you meet the basic legal requirements.

What are the requirements?

Under South Carolina law, homeschooling families using Option 3 must:

  1. Join a legally recognized homeschool association (like ours).

  2. Teach the following subjects:

    • Reading

    • Writing

    • Math

    • Science

    • Social Studies

    • Plus Literature and Composition for grades 7–12

  3. Teach for at least 180 days during the school year.

  4. Maintain simple records, including:

    • A plan or outline of what you’re teaching (lesson plans)

    • A record of attendance

    • Samples of your child’s work

    • A year-end progress report or report card

Do I need to register with the public school?

No. Under Option 3, you do not need to register with your local public school district. Once you’re a member of an association, you only need to maintain membership annually.

What does the association do?

As a homeschool association approved under Option 3:

  • We maintain membership records as required by law.

  • We report to the South Carolina Department of Education each year how many students we have enrolled.

  • We support you with guidance, updates, and community.

So why choose option 3?

  • Freedom: Teach your child in a way that fits your family

  • Flexibility: Choose your own curriculum and schedule

  • Support: Join a network of like-minded homeschooling families

What should I do now?

  • Join an approved homeschool association (parent responsibility)

  • Teach required subjects (parent responsibility/we can assist)

  • Teach for 180 days each year (parent responsibility/we can assist)

  • Keep simple records (parent responsibility/we can assist)

  • No reporting to the school district (Home Place Homeschool is required to report to all school districts every student enrolled in our Association) you may have to provide proof of membership to your child's assigned public school at their request.

Home Place Homeschool Association is a South Carolina Option 3 Accountability Program based in Oconee County SC
